Dan Brettig's report has the story of the day, and we'll soon have plenty of analysis and opinion from Brydon Coverdale and Sid Monga, both of whom are at the MCG. While you wait, what better way to spend a post-Christmas Monday than sneaking a peak at our commentary of the SA-SL Test. See you all back here at about 10.00 am tomorrow. Cheers!
6. 50 pm Winning the toss and batting here, I think Australia would have taken 300 for 5 at stumps. They haven't finished too far away from there. India had their moments, a few ripping deliveries that came quite close to getting wickets, and some other dodgy calls that went their way. I do think MS Dhoni missed a trick or two in a couple of phases today, but given how young his attack is, he won't be displeased either.

Sharma to Siddle, no run, pitches the last ball right up, if it had a voice it would have been pleading for an lbw. But it meets Siddle's forward press and he keeps it out. That's the end of the first day's play.
88.5
Sharma to Siddle, no run, full and searching on off stump, Siddle pushes with an angled face towards point.
88.4
Sharma to Siddle, no run, Ishant angles one in off the seam, Siddle defends off the front foot as the ball jumps up towards the top part of the bat.
88.3
Sharma to Siddle, no run, fuller length, gets Siddle to lean forward and defends off the front foot into the off side.
I am told Kingsmead is a sell-out for the second Boxing Day Test. The party continues!
88.2
Sharma to Siddle, no run, short of a length outside off, Siddle shoulders arms.
88.1
Sharma to Haddin, 1 run, the fielders are back on the off side, and Haddin happily pushes a single into the covers.
End of over 88 (12 runs) Australia 276/6
PM Siddle    34* (75b 4x4)      U Yadav    20-4-96-3
BJ Haddin    20* (59b)      I Sharma    19-6-39-0
87.6
Yadav to Siddle, no run, corker from Yadav. Jeez, India have bowled some stunners today that have gone unrewarded. The typical jaffa that angles in and climbs rapidly as it darts away off the seam. Siddle was beaten by miles.
87.5
Yadav to Siddle, no run, bangs one in, too short and a touch wide of off stump, and Siddle lets it go.
87.4
Yadav to Siddle, FOUR, three fours on the trot, another fortuitous one for Sidd. Yadav gets the perfect away seamers length, makes Siddle want to play and then want to leave. He was drawing the bat away but the ball followed it, hit the middle, and sped away through point.
87.3
Yadav to Siddle, 4 leg byes, Australia are taking this away now. Poor stuff from Yadav, on the pads and it runs straight off the legs to fine leg for four more.
87.2
Yadav to Siddle, FOUR, edged and safe. Umesh goes subtly fuller, draws Siddle into a drive and he gets a thick edge that stays low and flies past Kohli, who dives to his left at gully. Didn't have a chance really.
87.1
Yadav to Siddle, no run, whippy length ball seams away from Siddle from wide of off stump. Another easy leave.
End of over 87 (1 run) Australia 264/6
BJ Haddin    20* (59b)      I Sharma    19-6-39-0
PM Siddle    26* (69b 2x4)      U Yadav    19-4-88-3
86.6
Sharma to Haddin, no run, pitched up on a full length and seaming in off the straight, doesn't do enough to make Haddin play, again. Another leave.
86.5
Sharma to Haddin, no run, short of a length outside off, Haddin doesn't have to play at it. This is a poor over.
86.4
Sharma to Siddle, 1 run, back of a length, Siddle looks super organised as he dabs to the off side for a single. The 50-stand is up.
86.3
Sharma to Siddle, no run, wider of off stump and it holds its line too. Siddle leaves again.
86.2
Sharma to Siddle, no run, this one went away from Siddle, lands on the seam and jags away. Siddle shoulders arms.
Boy, how well have these two batted.
86.1
Sharma to Siddle, no run, short of a length and seaming in with incredible carry from back of a length. Siddle lets it go.
Ishant replaces Zaheer. Waiting for the new ball and playing defensive after Cowan got out, has back-fired big time on India
End of over 86 (maiden) Australia 263/6
BJ Haddin    20* (57b)      U Yadav    19-4-88-3
PM Siddle    25* (65b 2x4)      Z Khan    23-5-49-2
85.6
Yadav to Haddin, no run, stays on the crease and covers the line well to defend a length ball solidly.
85.5
Yadav to Haddin, no run, better, makes him play with a full length ball that straightens at pace. Haddin defends well.
85.4
Yadav to Haddin, no run, back of a length outside off, Haddin doesn't have to play it as it straightens down the line.
85.3
Yadav to Haddin, no run, pacy ball on the stumps, Haddin covers the line and defends from the crease down the track.
85.2
Yadav to Haddin, no run
85.1
Yadav to Haddin, no run, seams away from Haddin, peachy movement but not from close enough to make him play.
